The Gables Inn (54 Dodge St., 401/466-2213, www.gablesinnbi.com , mid-Apr.-Nov., $125-210) includes two 1860s Victorian inns with nice details like pressed-tin ceilings and vintage floral wallpapers. There are romantic, antique-furnished rooms here as well as more functionally furnished apartments and cottages better suited for longer stays and families with children. Amenities include barbecue grills and picnic tables, a laundry room, and bike racks. The inn is also very child friendly; cribs and strollers are available upon request, and beach supplies like chairs, umbrellas, and coolers are available as well. Baby Beach is only a two-minute walk away.

The Harborside Inn (213 Water St., 401/466-5504 or 800/825-6254, www.blockislandreservations.com , early May-late Oct., $110-230), along with the neighboring National Hotel, is one of the most recognizable buildings in Old Harbor, with its wedding-cake-like exterior facing the ferry landing. The Harborside is the smaller and somewhat quieter of the two inns, with small guest rooms but with high ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of light. Two-night stays are usually required on weekends, but you’ll find few places in Block Island cheaper during the high season, especially so close to the ferry and downtown shops and restaurants.
